Let’s talk menstrual cups🩸
I was walking through the supermarket the other week, and I randomly strolled down the feminine hygiene aisle on my way to checkout when I realized I hadn’t set foot in that aisle in YEARS. It felt so strange to be standing there in front of packages on packages of tampons and pads that I used to stockpile every single month but hadn’t used in the better part of a decade. And not because I don’t get my period regularly, but because I discovered the beauty of the menstrual cup and have never looked back🙌🏼 This little guy (girl?!) is GOLD🙌🏼
🌍At the time, the reason behind my switch was mostly environmental - the sheer amount of waste created from menstrual products, which take a heck of a long time (if ever) to decompose is sickening, and I figured if I could make the cup work, it was one small way I could contribute to having a lower carbon footprint.
💰Save money: although a bigger investment up front (most cups are about $20-40), I easily made up for the cost difference hundreds of times now. The average woman spends between $50-150 a YEAR on tampons or pads💸 Also, no more surprises and forgetting to supplies😩 #thankyoumenstrualcup
🌿Health: There is a much lower risk for TSS when using a menstrual cup because of the materials used in it and the fact that the blood is contained within it (not touching the vaginal walls) vs tampons. Also, my concern of toxic chemicals in tampons made my decision to switch even easier.
✌🏼Super convenient (this one only needs to be changed every 12 hours) and it’s actually comfortable - if it’s in right, I don’t even feel it💃🏻.
Downsides? It definitely has a bit of a learning curve, but find what cup and technique works for you and try it for a couple of cycles, and it’s a breeze afterwards. I’ve experienced leaks with cups that were too soft/pliable or because I didn’t position it correctly ,but this one by @dotcup really works so much better for me! And yes, using a cup does mean you need to clean it - I use water + soap after each use, and then boil it to sterilize at the end of my period.
What are your thoughts on menstrual cups? Have you tried them? 👇🏼👇🏼
