Guaranteed: you talk to yourself more than anyone else.

What stories are you telling yourself?
What beliefs are you affirming for yourself, time and time again?
What tone do you use when you talk to yourself?
What song is playing on repeat in your head?

According to the National Science Foundation, about 95% of our thoughts are repetitive. And 80% are negative.

Are you surprised?
I know I’m not.
I’ve said it time and time again: I am my own biggest critic. How about you?

The thing is, just because we’ve been telling ourselves these stories, just because we have this shitty anthem stuck in our heads, doesn’t make it true. We likely have just been carrying it for most of our lives: either we saw/heard it modeled to us by the adults around us (or in media even) growing up, or someone said it to us and it stuck. We began to believe it. It became true for us.

But that doesn’t mean that story is actually the truth of us.

For example, one story I have carried around for a long time, one that still comes back even today sometimes, is: my voice and talents are worthless and if/when I express them, I will get criticized/judged and/or ostracized. This stems back to some childhood memories, like hearing my friends talking about me behind my back after I won a school-wide art competition, my Dad criticizing me when I challenged the status quo, and when a teacher wrote nasty comments about my intelligence (I was labeled “gifted” at an early age) on my homework assignment. Those experiences deeply impacted me, and it’s taken me until my 30’s to begin to release the beliefs I have held around them.

The other thing is: we can change our stories! We can choose to start playing a different song. Our brains work like that - they can rewire based on what we feed ourselves through our self-talk and how we treat ourselves. Aka: repeat encouraging and supportive things to yourself and treat yourself with respect and love, and it begins to become your new operating system, your new reality. You are that fucking powerful.

You are so much more than the limiting stories you tell yourself. Take your power back and change the story.❤

What story are you ready to release?
